Notes for Modern Japanese History Association Roundtable "Remaking SHŌGUN" May 2024

Smith II, Henry D.

These are notes for a presentation I made at a roundtable discussion conducted online on May 2, 2024, and sponsored by the Modern Japanese History Association (MJHA). The moderator was Nick Kapur (Rutgers Univ), and the other speakers were Eleanor Hubbard, Mary Elizabeth Berry, and Morgan Pitelka. My presentation focused on the creation of the book "Learning from SHOGUN" in 1980, on the role of the legend of "Will" Adams as a British samurai, on the strong interest in Clavell's novel in Romania and other Eastern European countries, and remarks on Clavell's "Gai-Jin" of 1993 and the contrast with "SHOGUN".
