The Challenges of Mitigation and Adaptation
to Climate Change in Tehran, Iran
Tehran, Iran, faces significant challenges in mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to climate change due to rapid urban expansion, fossil fuel dependence, and car-oriented land-use planning. This case study examines the city’s main emission sources, particularly buildings and transportation, and explores mitigation efforts such as expanding metro and bus rapid transit systems. It also highlights the need for improved land-use management, community-based adaptation, and broader lifestyle changes to support sustainable urban development.
