Navigating Agro-Industrial Marginalization in an Era of Climate Change: The Case of Drâa-Tafilalet, Morocco

Hachimi, Aya

Africa stands at a pivotal moment in its development, confronting the dual pressures of resource exploitation and the promise of modernization. Beneath the veneer of progress lies a reality shaped by systemic inequalities, ecological degradation, and the marginalization of rural communities. Land and water, essential for survival and deeply tied to cultural identity, are increasingly diverted to serve external markets, creating cycles of dependency and deprivation. Rather than alleviating food insecurity, agricultural transformations across the continent have often exacerbated it, depriving communities of autonomy, resilience, and their connection to heritage.

This thesis explores these dynamics through a political ecology framework, uncovering the power structures that influence environmental changes and resource distribution. Morocco’s Drâa-Tafilalet region offers a compelling case study, showcasing the interplay between advancements in agricultural innovation and persistent socio-economic challenges. By integrating local, regional, and continental perspectives, this study emphasizes the need for agricultural approaches that prioritize equity and sustainability. The findings presented here underline that Africa’s agricultural future is not only about producing food but also about safeguarding identity, reclaiming agency, and ensuring the well-being of its people.
