Polishing and Engraving Stones
This essay reconstructs two recipes concerning the treatment of precious stones. The first, “For Diamond Points for Engraving” (fol. 11v), offers instructions to trace a design onto a stone in preparation for engraving. The second, “Polishing of Stones” (fol. 13r), concerns the polishing of already engraved or faceted stones. By reconstructing two processes practiced by goldsmiths, this essay aims to clarify the extent of the author-practitioner's knowledge of a specialized craft.
