Untold Stories - Emily Blackwell

Cholia, Rhea

This narrative highlights the untold story of Dr. Emily Blackwell, the third woman in the United States to earn a medical degree and a pivotal figure in advancing women's roles in medicine. Born in 1826, Emily overcame numerous challenges, including repeated rejections from medical schools and systemic sexism, to become a leader in obstetrics and gynecology. Alongside her sister, Elizabeth Blackwell, Emily co-founded the New York Infirmary for Women and Children and later the Women’s Medical College, institutions that provided opportunities for women in medicine and improved healthcare access for underserved populations. Emily's contributions to public health, medical education, and advocacy for women’s healthcare left an indelible legacy, inspiring generations of female medical professionals and shaping the future of medicine.
