Bus Rapid Transportation in Lagos and Johannesburg: Establishing Formal Public Transit in Sub-Saharan Africa
Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems in Lagos and Johannesburg represent early examples of formal mass transit development in Sub-Saharan Africa. Lagos implemented a lower-cost “BRT-lite” system that significantly reduced travel time, fares, waiting times, and emissions, while Johannesburg launched the continent’s first full BRT system with major mobility and safety benefits. Both systems improved transport efficiency while reducing greenhouse gas emissions and supporting economic opportunities. Their success demonstrates how affordable, community-engaged transit solutions can improve urban mobility and environmental outcomes in rapidly growing cities.
