Intensive Workshop on Power, Trauma and Grading for Online Campus Community at the Columbia University School of Social Work

Marquart, Matthea S.; Baez, Johanna C.; Garay, Kristin

An intensive workshop on power, trauma, and grading was provided as a pre-semester professional development training for the Online Campus community at the Columbia University School of Social Work on power, trauma, and grading. This innovative 6-hour online workshop over two days was created in response to instructor and student feedback around online classroom power dynamics and grading challenges. The workshop covered the following three topics: power dynamics in classrooms, trauma-informed teaching and learning, and how to implement trauma-informed grading practices. The live online workshop was highly interactive, with opportunities for participants to share experiences and ask questions to enhance teaching and learning with the Online Campus. The training used scholarly literature and classroom examples to adapt innovative ideas on power dynamic models (French & Raven, 1959; Raven, 1964) and trauma-informed teaching frameworks (Carello & Butler, 2015) with the overall goal of removing possible barriers to learning in online courses. This combination of ideas is unique and a contribution to the field of teaching and learning, as these models have not yet been combined and applied to online education. The workshop overviewed the literature and frameworks on the above models and provided opportunities for participants to adapt these ideas to their online teaching and grading practices. Challenging classroom moments around power, trauma, and grading were explored and tools provided for addressing different situations. The downloadable materials include the following: (1) Workshop slides: a. Slides day 1: Introduction and power dynamics in classrooms b. Slides day 1: Trauma-informed teaching and learning c. Slides day 2: Challenging classroom moments and power, trauma, and grading d. Slides day 2: Grading in the Canvas learning management system and trauma-informed teaching (2) Handout on trauma informed teaching and learning examples
