Connecting Urban Communities to Food Production
This case study explores the Fleet Street Urban Farm in London as an innovative approach to reconnect urban communities with food production through temporary, technology-enabled agriculture. Implemented in a vacant retail space using hydroponic systems, the project combined local food production with education, community engagement, and awareness of sustainable consumption. The initiative demonstrated how underutilized urban spaces can be rapidly transformed into productive, zero-food-mile environments that address food poverty, promote behavioral change, and foster community cohesion. Overall, the case highlights the potential of scalable, flexible urban farming models to support climate action, public health, and more resilient urban food systems.
