Authenticity, Secrecy And Public Space: Chen Kuiyuan and Representations of The Panchen Lama Reincarnation Dispute of 1995
A detailed account of the PRC response to the death of the 10th Panchen Lama in 1989 and of their handling of the selection of a child as his reincarnation in 1995. The main source is a collection of internal memos between Chinese leaders in Tibet and those in Beijing. The paper discusses media representations within Tibet of the selection process, including television footage, audio cassettes, poems, books, films and a famous painting of the selection ceremony, as well as theoretical implications of the publication of the internal memos.
