The Physical Construction of Ms. Fr. 640
Important clues about manuscripts can be inferred through analysis of their bindings. This essay not only examines Ms. Fr. 640’s current binding, but also attempts to determine its original construction and appearance by comparing it with other French manuscripts available in the collections of Columbia University Libraries, and by reconstructing a model of its binding and gatherings using a textblock made of “watermarked” paper following Marc Smith’s collation.
