Application of Urban Climatic Map to Urban Planning of High-Density Cities: An Experience from Hong Kong
Hong Kong’s high-density, hilly urban environment intensifies urban heat island effects by blocking natural breezes and reducing air ventilation, worsening heat stress and energy demand. The Hong Kong Urban Climatic Map System provides planners with evidence-based guidance on building volume, site coverage, airflow corridors, and greenery to optimize urban climate and improve thermal comfort. This framework supports climate adaptation by informing planning and design decisions to mitigate heat and enhance resilience in high-density cities.
