The Urban Climate Change Footprint of Greater Cairo

Abdelazem, Eman

Urban climate change will exacerbate existing climate vulnerabilities in Greater Cairo, with the potential to deepen ongoing human development and spatial inequalities. Climate change generates a high degree of uncertainty over water resources in the capital, increases climate vulnerability such as heat waves, and impacts biodiversity, as well as food production and availability. Greater Cairo's growing population will place additional pressures on urban service provision and deepen the exposure of assets and people to climate risks, with these risks disproportionately borne by the urban and peri-urban poor.
