Syngeries, Conflicts, and Tradeoffs Between Mitigation and Adaptation in Durban, South Africa
Durban integrates climate adaptation, mitigation, and development through initiatives that deliver social and environmental benefits. The city’s community-based reforestation project, which created jobs and enhanced carbon sequestration, evolved into the Community-Ecosystem-Based Adaptation (CEBA) approach linking ecosystems with livelihoods. Durban demonstrates how African cities can pursue low-carbon, resilient development while addressing social and economic challenges.
