Making Gold Run for Casting
Ms. Fr. 640 contains several entries for making metals “run.” Fluidly running metals are essential in casting. These entries, including “Making gold run for casting” on fol. 106r, are among the most carefully observed and most laboriously written sections in Ms. Fr. 640. Like lifecasting and gem making entries in other parts of the manuscript, they appear to have been at the heart of the author-practitioner’s interests and his firsthand experimentation.
