Environmental Justice Implications of Indonesia’s Capital Relocation from Jakarta to Nusantara

Xie, Cindy J.; Venketram, Anjali

Jakarta is a ‘sinking city.’ To guarantee its future, Indonesia is relocating its capital to the to-be-constructed city of Nusantara on Borneo island. In this case study, we demonstrate how this relocation will negatively affect Indigenous residents who live in vulnerable communities like the Balik and Paser communities of Borneo. We call for more effective stakeholder engagement (especially of vulnerable populations in Nusantara and Jakarta) and an official environmental justice strategy by the provincial governments.
