The Serra do Mar Project, Baixada Santista Metropolitan Region (BSMR), São Paulo State
The Serra do Mar and Atlantic Forest Mosaics System Recovery Program in São Paulo integrates disaster risk reduction, biodiversity protection, and climate resilience through community resettlement and ecosystem restoration. Targeting flood- and landslide-prone areas, the program has relocated over 5,000 families, restored more than 1,200 hectares of Atlantic Forest, and improved living conditions while preserving ecological integrity. It combines social, economic, and environmental measures, including professional training and sustainable housing, to ensure long-term resilience. The program demonstrates how coordinated institutional action can balance human safety, urban ecology, and climate adaptation in vulnerable tropical regions.
