Cisneros después de Cisneros: la recepción del rito mozárabe en la Edad Moderna

Boynton, Susan Leslie

The continued existence of the Mozarabic rite in the early modern period was due largely to the initiative of Francisco Ximénez de Cisneros as archbishop of Toledo from 1495 to 1517. Observing the increasingly rare practice of the rite, and the difficulty of access to its texts, Cisneros effectively perpetuated it by commissioning new editions and endowing its celebration in a chapel of his cathedral. All the early modern publications and commentaries related to the rite are monuments to his initiative. This commemorative reception extends from the time of the Catholic monarchs to the study of the Mozarabic rite in the eighteenth century, not only by Jesuit scholars but also by French bibliophiles of the ancien régime.
