The erosion of royal authority and the wars of religion disrupted the kingdom of France from 1562 to 1598. However, as scholars have demonstrated recently, this troubled history did not translate into artistic decay. The professional trajectories of artisans from Toulouse, such as Dominique Bertin and Hélie Bachelier, shed light on the context in which Ms. Fr. 640 was written. It allows us to understand how these artisans put their versatile talents at the service of political power, revealing the economic and military benefits of their know-how.
