Integrating Climate Disaster Risk within an Interdisciplinary Urban Agenda: Lessons Drawn from the Brazilian Experience

Kruczkiewicz, Andrew J.; Pontual, Camila; Weinberg, Jessica; Pereira, Isabella; Baethgen, Walter E.

From a global perspective, there are significant gaps in understanding the relationship between socioeconomic and governance factors, along with the climate elements of these disasters. Without standard approaches connecting these factors to the impact of disasters, it can lead to a misrepresentation of the relationship between developing policy and standard operating procedures for risk reduction, extreme event early warning, anticipatory action, and, more broadly, across adaptation strategies. With over 40% of the total loss and damage from disasters in Rio de Janeiro being absorbed by sectors that are directly related to the livelihoods and health of the most vulnerable communities, there is an urgent need to improve our understanding of the connectivity of these spaces and to ensure that policy and decision-making standards are informed appropriately.
