Radio Haiti-Inter: An Examination of a Radio Archive and Its Contributions To Haitian Political And Cultural Memory

Alexis, Laissa

This study examines the archives of Radio Haiti-Inter, a radio station that operated in Haiti for much of the latter half of the 20th century. Examining the contents of the archive from 1994 to 2000, this thesis posits that Radio Haiti-Inter provided a democratic space for people’s participation in politics at a time where these populations were excluded from public discourse at the national and international level. Much of the literature about this era focuses on the UN’s missions and the figure of Jean-Bertrand Aristide and his party. This study seeks to highlight that understanding popular participation in Haiti’s political discourse is key to gaining a rich comprehension of the political landscape in the 1990s
