Community Spotlight - Mailman Personal Leadership Course - St. Joseph Church Food Pantry - Mary Mussalli

Mussalli, Mary; Lataillade, Morgan; Shields, Nina; Weinberg, Alysse; Habing, Lillian; Tang, Claudia

The Community spotlight assignment was created out of a real need for public health students to be able to effectively engage with professionals from a variety of disciplines, specifically those outside of traditional public health fields, in order to make impactful changes over the life of their careers and be public health leaders.

The community spotlight assignment gives students the ability to practice this skill of listening and learning from professionals in other sectors, as well as integrating those perspectives with their own. The assignment allows students, in groups of 4-5 students (maximum), to conduct an interview with an organization and/or entity outside of the traditional public health field.

Through this interview, students learn more about the work of this organization, individual, or entity, the challenges they deal with, and their interface with public health issues and professionals. Ahead of the interview, each group will be tasked with developing several student-designed questions to ask the organization. This Community Spotlight focusses on St. Joseph Church Food Pantry.
