Climate Adaptation through Sustainable Urban Water Development in Can Tho City, Vietnam
The Can Tho City case demonstrates how integrated urban water management (IUWM) can enhance climate resilience in rapidly urbanizing, low-lying tropical cities. By combining strategic planning, participatory stakeholder engagement, and pilot demonstrations, including rainwater harvesting and peri-urban water servicing, the project addressed fragmented water systems, limited infrastructure, and climate-induced hazards such as flooding and salinity intrusion. Strong local capacity-building and collaborative research partnerships ensured the adoption of sustainable practices and knowledge retention. This approach improved community resilience, informed local policy, and provided transferable methods for other cities facing similar urban water challenges.
