Consolidated Edison after Hurricane Sandy: Planning for Energy Resilience
After Hurricane Sandy in 2012, New York’s electricity provider Con Edison experienced widespread infrastructure damage and prolonged power outages, highlighting vulnerabilities in the city’s energy system. In response, the company proposed major investments in storm hardening and infrastructure protection to improve resilience. Collaboration among regulators, scientists, NGOs, and academic institutions led to expanded planning that incorporates future climate risks such as flooding, wind, and heat waves. This effort established a framework for integrating climate projections into utility planning and strengthening long-term energy system resilience.
