The Kashf al-ẓunūn of Katib Çelebi (1609–1657): The Invisibility of a Successful Bibliography (Turkish translation by Tülay Artan and Mert Şen)
The article examines the Kashf al-ẓunūn’s circulation inside and outside the Ottoman lands, and investigates how the reference work reflects seventeenth-century book production in a Muslim majority manuscript culture that co-existed with the emergent print cultures of its Jewish and Christian minorities. I argue that Katib Çelebi (1609–1657) compiled the Kashf al-ẓunūn for a book culture, for which the text of a literary work was perceived as being fully independent of its medium, since the entries are designed to correctly identify written texts, and little to no attention was paid to the particularities of the medium through which they were transmitted.

The editors Tülay Artan and Hatice Aynur had solicited an English article about the Kashf al-ẓunūn, which I submitted in Jan. 2019. They accepted my article without requesting corrections or rewrites. Later I was informed that they would not use my original English version, and yet they did not offer me the opportunity to revise and update my 2019 article. In 2022 the editors published this Turkish version without obtaining my approval for their changes and revisions.
