Schools under suspicion. Progressive and Critical Sociology to Think Education for All

Tenti, Emilio; Pineau, Pablo

This summary of Emilio Tenti’s book La escuela bajo sospecha. Sociología progresista y crítica para pensar la educación para todos pinpoints the sociological problems of schools that make them the main suspect for social instability. According to the author, today’s education systems do not meet the expectations that society places on them – they do not contribute to developing a more egalitarian nation nor to promoting essential skills for new generations. Some blame teachers or low investment in public education. Tenti, however, suggests analyzing the interaction between family and school, which produces and reproduces cultural hierarchies. Tenti touches on globalization as well, exposes its drawbacks in education, to end with suggestions on how schools can improve. Comments by Pablo Pineau.
