Reverse Painting on Glass
In an entry on fol. 39v titled “For tracing some history on glass,” the author-practitioner describes a technique now known as verre églomisé that imitates basse-taille enamelling. This essay examines the reemergence of this ancient technique in early modern Italy and France, and it draws on early modern objects and technical manuals to how early modern artisans understood the tasks of the painter and the goldsmith as overlapping fields of artistic production with particular shared techniques, materials, and concerns for optical effect.
