Parents and Caregivers In Academia (CSSW)

Nurse, Trina

Completing any educational program while balancing the competing demand of family, career, and life requirements can cause work-life conflict and economic strain. To recruit and retain scholars who are parents/ caregivers, especially those from historically excluded communities, educators must understand they are a parent/caregiver's scholar-first support system. Because caregivers/ parents are expected to face the challenges of balancing work and family, their education is not always a priority and can be an added challenge if educators do not intervene and show up for those scholars. Because universities do not ask for family data, educators need to normalize these conversations within the classroom to support students and help build community.
