Early in 1999, a small, poor, and backward, corner of Europe became the center of world attention. On March 24, the self-proclaimed greatest military alliance in history began a 78-day bombing campaign against the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY), allegedly to force it to accept the terms of an international settlement for regulating the FRY's relations with its rebellious province of Kosovo.
