Cultivating Identity and Community through Latin American Sports and Games

Candan, Mariana

This curriculum guide is an exploratory collection of traditional, family games and sports played in Latin America for all K-12 teachers. It highlights physical activities and athletics practiced throughout the region to discover how multiple forms of identity develop and change over time, as well as their connection to culture, social environments, and love for the game. The guide is an empirical approach to physical education and a starting point for school learning communities to evolve into globally aware beings of the relationship between sports, cultures, and the connections among community members that transcend national boundaries. It consists of three units containing a warm-up/cool-down set of activities, and six ready-to-use lesson plans that promote engagement, inquiry and motion, develop higher learning and research skills, and build new understandings.
