“Do Not Speak for Us”: Darfurian Perspectives on Transitional Justice In a Revolutionary Sudan
This preliminary research captures a snapshot of contemporary views and narratives of Darfurians concerning how they think the legacies of the Darfur genocide should be dealt with. The study seeks to further expand academic knowledge on Darfurians experiences of the conflict, its causal factors, and which forms of violence/human rights abuses continue to affect the daily lives of survivors. These aims are achieved through an inductive and participatory research design: 7 interviews and 14 surveys were conducted with Darfurians in Khartoum.
The research findings display a diversity of views and serve to add nuance and texture to our understanding of the path to TJ for Darfur. Just as there is no single TJ response that can redress the legacies of the past, there is no single stakeholder with the answers to how Darfur should move forwards. As such, this research serves as an invitation for future work which may chart a potential path for TJ by systematically surveying Darfurian communities on a larger scale.
