Hoppner, Beechey, Fisher, Lavery: Researching Columbia's Portraits
This brochure-style catalogue was published to accompany the exhibition with the same title held in Avery Architectural & Fine Arts Library from February 11th to May 10th, 2019. The exhibition explored the idea of British identities, both historical and in the age of Brexit, and focused on four historical portraits from Columbia's permanent art collection, stewarded by Art Properties. The works discussed and illustrated are: Portrait of Isabella Ricketts, later Mrs. Stanlake Henry Batson, ca. 1800-01, by John Hoppner; Portrait of King George III, early 19th century, by Sir William Beechey and studio; Portrait of Walter Savage Landor, 1838, by William Fisher; and Portrait of Kate La Montagne Butler (Mrs. Nicholas Murray Butler), 1927, by Sir John Lavery.
