Fostering a culture of innovation by harnessing technology to enable inclusive faculty development

Our discussion focused on the Annual Online Faculty Development Series for Online Campus faculty and staff at the Columbia University School of Social Work. The series launched in AY2018-19 and consists of five two-hour live virtual sessions, held throughout the academic year. Each session is interactive, engaging, and tightly orchestrated, with up to 20 presenters per session, and the series includes innovations such as lightning round teaching & learning showcases, digital badges for series completion, student and alumni presentations, prominent inclusion of adjuncts, free continuing education units for licensed social workers, asynchronous options, and participation from School leadership. The overall goals for these series are to build community, showcase successes, and support continuous professional development. This series is open to all CSSW Online Campus full time & adjunct faculty, teaching assistants (associates), technical support (live support specialists), and administrators. The sessions are scheduled in the evenings for accessibility to part time faculty and staff who have other jobs and are located in different time zones.
