"'A meanes to knitt them togeather': The Exchange of Body Parts in the Pequot War"

Lipman, Andrew Charles

This article argues that the exchange of wartime trophies between Native peoples and their colonial allies in the 1636-8 English war against the Pequots served as a kind of diplomatic act of translation (and mistranslation) between different cultures of violence, one that Native partners hoped would ensure an alliance, but ironically served to enable a conquest of sorts.
