Reporting for Duty: The Bohemian Brigade, the Civil War, and the Social Construction of the Reporter
Based on four memoirs by reporters covering the American Civil War for major New York newspapers, this essay explores a turning point in the way some journalists presented themselves to the public. For the first time, journalists were writing about their work and making explicit claims about their rights and responsibilites as narrators of the nation's stories. They were beginning to think of themselves as a class apart--as professionals.
