Transforming the Justice System for Emerging Adults with Substance Use Disorders

Siringil Perker, Selen

In this presentation for SAMHSA’s GAINS Center’s Diversion and Supports for Transition-Age Youth in the Criminal Justice System Learning Collaborative, I shared recent research on the distinct developmental stage of transition-age youth (young/emerging adults, ages 18–25) and delinquency, as well as its overlap with substance use disorders (SUD). I also discussed the principles of care that we published in the official journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics to guide justice system responses to system-involved emerging adults with SUDs (https://doi.org/10.1542/peds.2020-023523H).
