Community Urban Gardens in Alto Fucha, Bogotá: A Strategy for Social and Ecological Cohesion
This case study examines community urban gardens in Alto Fucha, Bogotá, as a grassroots nature-based solution that integrates climate adaptation, social cohesion, and resistance to displacement. Led by local organizations such as Huertopía, gardens are established on lands affected by relocation due to landslide risk, transforming them into spaces for ecological restoration, food production, and collective memory. The initiative demonstrates how community-led urban agriculture can mitigate environmental risks, enhance biodiversity, and strengthen environmental education, while asserting residents’ rights to remain in their territory. Overall, the case highlights the co-benefits of nature-based solutions in advancing both social justice and urban ecological resilience.
