The Impact of Paid Sick Leave Mandates on Women's Employment, Well-Being, and Health
Paid sick leave allows workers to take job-protected leave to address a health-related need for themselves or a family member. However, in the United States, there is no national policy leaving many workers unable to take a paid leave to address a health issue. This dissertation includes three papers examining the impact of state-level paid sick leave mandates on the employment, economic security, and health of women and their families.
Paper one considers the effects of paid sick leave mandates on the employment and economic security of women. Paper two examines the impact of paid sick leave mandates on women's self-reported health status and daily physical and mental well-being. Finally, paper three explores the impact of paid sick leave mandates on prenatal care use and birth outcomes. Collectively, the papers find that paid sick leave mandates promise to improve the economic security and health of women and their families and provide support for implementing additional policies at the state or federal level.
