London's Crossrail: Integrating Climate Change Mitigation in Construction and Operations
London’s Crossrail project demonstrates how large-scale urban rail infrastructure can reduce long-term greenhouse gas emissions despite high construction energy demands. The new east–west rail line will expand transit capacity, improve connectivity across Greater London, and encourage a shift away from higher-emission transport modes. Crossrail incorporated sustainability strategies throughout planning, construction, and operations, including energy-efficient train design and extensive recycling of construction materials. These measures aim to achieve net emissions reductions while supporting economic growth and improved urban mobility.
