Gilding on Paper and Parchment

Goldenberg, Lila

Among recipes in BnF Ms. Fr. 640 devoted to gilding, two give instructions for laying gold leaf on paper and parchment, and these recipes distinguish themselves by their reliance on an unusual mordant made from wheat starch (fols. 10v and 29v). By reconstructing these recipes, this essay evaluates the possible ways in which this adhesive could have been used in the context of gilding on paper and parchment.
