Today, when ethnic identity and nation-building have assumed a hegemonic place in the programs of AAASS conventions, at the recent world Congress in Tampere and in specialist organizations such as the Association for the Study of Nationalities, it is difficult for the current generation of social science and humanities scholars to realize that these issues were decidedly at the margins of earlier Sovietological agendas.
