A study of the issue of loyalty to France across all categories of population (whites, free-coloreds, and slaves) in eighteenth-century Saint-Domingue, from the perspective of Charles Henri d’Estaing, governor of the colony from 1764 to 1766, and author of a play on slavery in Sparta during the French Revolution (Les Thermopyles, 1791).
