Horizontal and Vertical Mobility in Organizations Horizontal and Vertical Mobility in Organizations
Most studies of white-collar mobility in organizations have examined either overall rates of vertical mobility through a hierarchy (Stewman and Konda, 1983; Rosenbaum, 1984) or factors associated with the presence of formally defined job ladders (Pfeffer and Cohen, 1984; Baron, Davis-Blake, and Bielby, 1986). Primarily because of data limitations, the connection between formal structure and behavior is not well understood. The issue, however, is an important one.
