Update on the Japanese Economy

Ogata, Shijuro

With the arrival of the fall of 2003, the Japanese economy seemed to have started to change for the better
finally after its long stagnation. This is in view of rising stock prices, improving corporate
performance, a positive real growth for seven quarters in a row (though the deflator has been
negative for 22 quarters in a row), a rather rosy outcome of the latest Tankan survey, and other
positive indicators.
