Alternative Transportation Modes: How to Create More Options in Los Angeles

Tam, Joyce

The City of Los Angeles is the 2nd largest city in the United States. With a population of nearly 4 million that needs to get to and from work every day, the transportation infrastructure needs to be able to accommodate these commuters. Known for their car dependent lifestyles, Angelenos also have options for alternative modes of transportation. An infrastructure system that provides more options for a multi-modal lifestyle can help to create more opportunities for Angelenos to move around their city. Through mapping and site analysis, this paper will provide a strategy and recommendations for how to implement a more diversified transportation network that is more welcoming to bicyclists and pedestrians. Selecting a group of transit stations and analyzing the spatial characteristics will provide the groundwork for how to begin the process of creating an integrated bike-transit network. By making more options available, Los Angeles could accommodate alternative modes of transportation.
