The Hell is Here: Being an LGBTQ Refugee in the Middle East & North Africa

Freeman, Cody

This report examines the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) refugees in the Middle East and North Africa. Spectra Project created an online needs assessment survey to evaluate the availability of resources for LGBTQ refugees. Results show that LGBTQ refugees were largely not registered with UNHCR and faced challenges related to employment, life threats, and language. Additionally, their greatest needs included legal counseling, education, emergency assistance, and healthcare. Key demographics (i.e. age, educational level, and sexual orientation or gender identity expression) greatly influenced LGBTQ refugees access to resources.
