Reflections on Diaspora and Transnational Studies in American Curricula
Professor Spivak challenges the traditional notions of "diaspora" and "transnational migration" in modern global society. Diaspora reflects a time when travel was not as easy as today. Transnational migration should be thought of beyond the idea of migration from one nation-state to another. In relation to the conference topic of Russian migration, she introduces the reality that what are thought of as "Russian" or Russian-speaking peoples actually represent a broad array of ethnic and language groups.
