"Love is Not a Crime": Goals of the Gay Movement in Morocco

Pori, Isabella

This paper examines the legal, religious, and social prejudice against gay people in Morocco. Using interviews with leaders of the major gay rights organizations in the country, as well as gay Moroccans not involved in activism, this paper seeks to understand the goals of the gay movement. For both activists, and gay people not involved in activism, the most important goal of any gay movement is the repeal of Article 489, which criminalizes homosexuality.
