The Drama of Celebrity: Defiance

This chapter uses the example of 19th-century actor Sarah Bernhardt and the theories of 20th-century sociologist Erving Goffman to analyze why publics so often reward celebrities who blatantly defy conventions, disobey rules, and depart from norms.
