Key to the Classroom: Teaching as Improvisation
This essay explores classroom teaching as improvisational practice, suggesting that greater attention should be paid to teaching new college and university instructors the skills to managing the classroom in real time. Unlike the K-12 world, higher education provides little if any guidance to instructors on how to engage in pedagogical improvisation. The author suggests a change in culture is in order, encouraging academics to talk and share openly about classroom practices.
