In the Quiet of the Monastery: Buddhist Controversies over Quietism
The Christian notion of 'Quietism' has sometimes been used in the West to criticize Buddhism. Within Buddhism itself (in particular Chan or Zen), a similar criticism has prevailed at times. This essay examines the history of such controversies.
